It shall be the duty of the municipal council in every¹[municipal area] and of every municipal council whose local limits are altered, to cause, at its own cost, to be erected or set up if and when so required by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner, and thereafter to maintain, at its own cost, substantial boundary marks of such description and in such positions as shall be approved by the Deputy Commissioner defining the limits or the altered limits of the¹[municipal area] subject to its authority.
